If you are looking for a prime lens look at the Sigma 500mm f4.5.

You can get a mirror lens for a low price, but it's not going to give you excellent images.
Lots of choices --

What do you consider breaking the bank?

You might want to consider renting a lens for your trip.

Realisticly, the Sigma 50/150-500mm is the best option for Nikon users AT 500MM. There are a couple good options at 420mm though. The Nikon 300mm F4 W/1.4X and the Sigma 100-300 F4 W/1.4X, both great lenses.
