What has this to do with Arles?

Cheers,

Does anyone here regularly (or even occasionally) attend the Rencontres Photographiques in Arles in the South of France? It's the biggest gathering of fine art photographers in the world, held in the first week or so of July every year.

For a flavour of 2008, 2009, 2010, take a look at

Ignore the worrying word 'subscription' in the links as they date from a previous generation of the site, before it was all free. No ads, either.

Never heard of it, thus I have no plans to go. I might place in que after Alaska, New zealand, jungfrau(again), other; also I become bored with mention of "South of France".
BTW I live in South of US.

Dear David,

Why (and indeed how) do you "become bored with mention of "South of France""? I mean, I mentioned it only once.

Cheers,

R.

Thanks for the invite. I would love to "run with those bulls" who use Leica M8's for walk-around cameras.

This has to be a very powerful event in the Art Photo world. I had not heard of the exhibit before this but it seems to be fairly new.

This show experience would be a wonderful source of inspiration and it would influence ones photography for many years into the future.

I got my first job in photography due to a single frame I shot by accident at a booth demonstrating strobe equipment at Photokina in 1969. It was perfectly lit, perfectly posed (by models) and it was shot in Germany, a foreign country.

If JR is there I'll be there.

No, it's not new; it was founded in1970. But yes, it's an incredible source of inspiration, both in what to do and (sometimes) what not to do. And it's a gorgeous place to photograph. It's not even expensive, if you stay in the right places: Frances and I pay 40€ a night (call it $55) for a hotel inside the city walls on one of the main squares, private facilities (but no elevator). Of course you can easily pay 150€ a night too...

Hope to see you there!

Cheers,

R.

Interesting question.. ..I acknowledge it is my personal bias....Over a period of several years I had numerous business dealings with a few native Swiss and Swiss French, in Geneva it is difficult to tell the difference, these people were obviously empowered with wealth and without fail, they routinely talked of a past or future visit to their villa in "the South of France" with more than a bit of arrogance.
I have a problem with people that exhibit that type behavior, so I associated "South of France" with these flawed people. IMO.
Also, most other Swiss and European people I associated with were very cordial and friendly while having wealth. To me, IMHO, it is the hallmark of deep character to have wealth without arrogance. So, thank you for the question.

Very true, and thanks for your reply. But really, not all of the South of France is inhabited by the financially overprivileged. Arles REALLY isn't. I wouldn't go there (and wouldn't be able to afford to go there) it it were.

The night before we got to Arles, this year, we stayed in an hotel that cost 35€ a night for an en-suite room, and charged (as far as I recall) 10€/head, wine included, for an all-you-can-eat buffet. That's $47 for a double room and $13.50 a head for dinner. Not exactly the domain of the super-rich!

Cheers,

R.
