Raw files with new Canon 70D

Recently acquired a new Canon 70D which is great but, Photoshop CS5 will not open the raw files and I learned that no upgrades to the program will materialize. I refuse to pay a monthly fee for cloud and the only option is to upgrade to Photoshop CS6 which will process the raw files. Just figured you guys might like to know before purchasing this camera.

Use the DPP that comes with the camera. Convert with DPP to tiff or jpeg, and send that to PS.
Or process entirely with DPP.

You can open in Adobe Bridge, double click on to open it. It will do a little song and dance then it will open Photo Shop.

Bill......Camera raw will not open raw files because the version of camera raw does not support files from a 70D. I tried it, it doesn't work!!

With virtually every new iteration of camera bodies (at least with Canons), the raw .CR2 format changes just enough so that older raw converters can't recognize it, and it may take a few weeks/months/seasons for your software publishers to update their programs. I found this out with the 6D; MS Explorer didn't recognise them, and my PP software took a while to come out with converters. The 70D I'm sure is the same - now, whether or not Adobe comes out with an updated ACR or not is up to them, unfortunately. The camera mfgs say it's the software publishers responsibility, the software guys say it's the manufacturers, and the consumer is stuck in the middle.

I agree with what you've said but I don't think the people at photoshop care. From what I've read to date, PS5 will not get upgraded to receive these files because they are pushing cloud so they can get monthly fees to subscribe. It's no different than canon requiring a new model grip be purchased for each new camera instead of incorporating a previous design into the new camera. It's all about corporate greed with no loyalty to their consumers.

ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) latest v 8.0 still doesn't support 70D. Probably in next version. Use you DPP & Bridge software (came with camera) until updated ACR is available. See other posts for options.

* The file encryption found in some Nikon raw formats has caused some users to question the level of cooperation between Nikon and Adobe in providing solutions for raw processing. Get more information about Nikon and Adobe's joint commitment to the common needs of customers.

† The DNG raw file format is supported in previous versions of Lightroom and Camera Raw. This update improves the color and noise profiles for these models.

Note: Adobe is often able to provide preliminary support for raw files from new camera models not listed above. Camera Raw and Lightroom will open and edit these files, but profiling and testing is not complete.

I don't know that I'd go that far. For one thing, Canon doesn't require that you buy a battery grip. It's entirely voluntary. So, for the most part, is the use of Photoshop, Lightroom, or other Adobe products. But I'd be very surprised if Adobe doesn't at some point offer raw support for the 70D because it will probably be a very popular camera. It's just that these things don't happen overnight, and, don't forget, Canon doesn't release their raw specs into the wild (nor do any other manufacturers, probably), so a certain amount of reverse engineering has to take place.

I have my new 70 d for a couple of weeks and been using Aperture 3 for my editing software with no problems. I haven't tried anything else like Elements because I am just having too much fun with this camera. Aperture for my Mac pro works without any problems.

Download Adobe DNG converter.
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Windows
It converts any RAW file for use in any version of PS or PSE and it's free.

You beat me to it. I found I have to use this for my 60D if I want to use PSE 10. I found this to be true even if I start my PP in LR5 and decide I want to do something in PSE 10 afterwards.

Linciln, "Digital Photo Professional" came with my Canon, and it will open the raw files immediately. Give it a try.
