Overexposure

Finally, a sunny December day not far from Seattle, and a heron posing just for me. Unfortunately, I left my camera setting on "cloudy" and I have oodles of wonderful pics that are over exposed. Are there adjustments in either PSE or Lightroom to fix this?

PSE, Enhance - Adjust Lighting - Highlights/Shadows. I tried it out, and it helps a lot; but is no cure all. Over exposures are harder to deal with, than moderate under exposures.

If you are shooting in RAW + JPEG you can open the RAW photo and reset your White Balance and exposure. That should totaly fix it.
If you shot in JPEG only, your choices are limited

The cloudy setting adjust White Balance, shouldn't effect exposure at all. The bird and grass is over because of the darkness of the water...your camera tried to "balance" the scene.

I hope you shot in RAW as well because that is such a GREAT shot.

I played around in PSE10 & Topaz. With your permission I will repost it.

I think you hit the nail on the head right there. Thanks for your input, I should have seen it myself, but I guess it is all part of the learning curve.

First off I opened the image up in PSE10, and using the content aware brush, removed the shadows. Then I went into Topaz Adjust 5, a plug-in for Elements and Photoshop, made a few minor adjustments one of which was saturation. To reduce the overexposure problem I used the burn tool to darken the bright areas in the photo.

It's a great plug-in. Right now it's 15% off the reg. price of 49.99. If you sign up at their wesite for future webinars they usually will send you a follow up e-mail with a 30% discount for all the plug-ins they offer.

Someone already commented correctly on the white balance issue - and yes you probably did overexpose a bit - but in MHO the best solution is NOT more software to "fix a problem" but rather learn to compose and learn to notice the light.......human mistake - plain and simple and there will be more sunny days in Seattle

just a thought-- try cropping a little more on the left and right to make a vertical composition. might be really dramatic! pkanter
