Lawana, you cut the feet off the poor guy in photo 1! In photo 2 it would have been more interssting if you could have gone around and had a bit more of the front of this poor chap. Regards,

I also enjoy photographing the homeless however Im not sure what is proper etiquette. Do you ask permission? Long lens? Have you ever had a "situation" that was uncomfortable?

Two schools of thought here 1)Use a long lens and take photos without them knowing (candid) and If they notice you They'll probably think that you're from the FBI or BATF and they're being monitored 2)Go and chat with them and ask whether you can take a picture. You may be pleasantly surprised. Sometimes they may ask you for a handout and it is up to you to decide whether to give or not. Here in Southern Africa we normally ask and sometimes the locals insist that you pay them, normally a small 'posing fee'. Keep on taking photos, it's a great hobby!

IMHO do yourself a favor and remain as anonymous as possible. I have been accosted in NY, MO, and CA and Mexico for asking permission. They are about as demanding as street musicians in New Orleans. Use a long lens and shoot when they aren't looking.

Been to New Orleans many many times. Never had a problem with demanding street musicians. Of course if I took their picture I put some money in the tip jar. If I enjoyed their music I usually gave them a small tip. I got what I wanted which was a good street shot and they got paid for providing entertainment. Everybody's happy.

What I would like to known, more than the how and etiquette is why?

This is a social subject and the shame of many civilized countries to let folks outside in the heat or cold.

English; unlike here in the US in Canada they have a unique acceptance of the homeless. I wouldn't say they encourage it but they definitely don't have the same attitude as we do here.
And a lot of them have pretty unique stories and for the most part the ones I have ventured to talk with are happy in their situations. go figure????

having been homeless myself, I have to agrre with the wolf (go figure) and ask why? these people only have their dignity left, many suffer from mental illnesses, that 40 myears ago would have them being taken care of in a state institution. Unless you are a photojournalist working on a story, please show the homeless some respect and do not take photos of them like they were freaks or dancing bears.
