A while back, I began a post on Folk Remedies that many found interesting. One of the Folk items I read about was the use of Vanilla Extract mixed with water as an insect repellant.

My wife and I have been using it for the last month here in Florida, often walking through swampy areas and it has been working. I like it because I can spray it directly onto my face and ears without concern.

It may be too late for a true trial in this hemisphere, but perhaps our friends from down under could verify it? Just a thought.

Larry

I've never heard of it. I'll have to give it a try. We have ticks, flies, mosquitoes, chigger and no see 'ums all year 'round.

Hi Larry. I have used your 'brew' for mossies. It works. Another favorite here is equal parts of citronella, Dettol, & oil (olive, castor, etc). Shake well before use. Earl.

What is the proportion of vanilla to water? The Mosquitos here are awful and I'm tired of smelling like insecticide.

I'm not trying to be funny here but wouldn't vanilla attract something bigger, like bears? Bears have an incredible sense of smell and a sweet tooth, or two.

I was watching the new spin-off show, Tickle,(my secret vice--well, not secret anymore) and he used Listerine, the mouthwash, as a home remedy to repel mosquitoes.

Instructions

1. Get a clean, shallow small container and add 1 tbs. of pure, clear, sugarless vanilla extract. Using vanilla extract that contains added ingredients, like sugar, may result in sticky skin and attract more insects.
2. Add 1 tbs. of water to the container. Stir the mixture so that the vanilla extract and water mix thoroughly.
3. Dip a cotton ball or another absorbent material into the mixture and wipe it on your skin. Make sure to treat all exposed areas.
4. Apply undiluted drops of vanilla extract to your neck, wrists and other pulse points.
5. Reapply the solution and undiluted vanilla extract drops at the first sign of its effectiveness diminishing. Using vanilla extract as an insect repellent usually works for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Got this off the web. Don't know if it works or not. Just make sure the Vanilla Extract is PURE. No additives! Don't want no stinkin' bears!

I've heard of using Skin-so-soft also but someone told me that because it so readily is absorbed into the skin it needs to be re-applied often.
Any truth to that--anyone???

I've also heard S-S-S is good for the creepy crawlers like chiggers & ticks and is good for fleas
Anyone had experience with that use???

A little off subject but, I heard that store bought repellant that has DEET in it will melt the rubber coatings on most cameras. Wash your hands before grabbing your camera!

You would think it would attract other critters as well but I haven't noticed a menagerie following me.

I've tried Listerine as well as Skin So Soft and vinegar with no luck. Although the vinegar will ease the pain and itch of bug bites and sunburn!

I use garlic as well. I enjoy the taste and it seems to help somewhat. I used to sprinkle garlic on my dog's food to help with fleas. Seemed to work.

We just mixed one ounce vanilla to one quart water. I spray it on liberally and it seems to last for a few hours for me. Your method sounds more potent, though.
