Recently I took a 3 hour DSLR workshop and the instructor recommended Lightshop 3. I downloaded a trial version of it and like the features. I googled The top recommended photography programs and Photoshop came in as one of the top programs.

I am looking to process photos, tweak exposure, etc.

I really appreciate any thoughts you ight have on this topic.

Many thanks!!!

lightroom 3 is the way to go for sure, go online and google lightroom presets, there is a ton of free ones to give your photos different effects like dramatic skys, black and whts, single out one color, also you can upload all your photos at once instead of one at a time in photoshop. I normally only use photoshop if I have graphic design work or have to remove stuff from pics, lightroom has everything you need trust me

Thank you so much for the feedback and the tip on presets. Love your pics. I am very interested in singling out one color. Great effect!

they are two different animals. Both use the same ACR program.

It may come down to your use. Lightroom has some basic editing functions sbut it is basically a cataloging program.

If it is doing what you need , that is the most important feature.

I'm a happy lightroom user, and I think if you work at getting the photo right in the camera, it will do all you need. If you want to do a lot of adjustments, compositing, etc. you may prefer photoshop or elements, but PS was created for graphic designers, and you'll pay for many features you probably won't use.

LR is more then a basic editing program and a very powerful cataloging program. You will probably be able to do 95% of what you will need and for that 5% check out photoshop elements

I love my Lightroom 3. The improvements in this version are wonderful. Except for layers, I'm able to do all likes of photographic adjustments in Lightroom.

I have heard this as well, but it has far more capabilities than just cataloging. Especially with the use of the Enfuse plugin that blends multiple exposures together or user presets (some that are highly creative). Perfect Layers 2 can help to combine images for more creativity. And obviously the basic treatments of exposure & color.

Just to make sure that others know there is more to it than just cataloging.

That is correct, but now your adding Perfect layers which is another piece of software and Enfuse which is also another plug in.

I didn't mean to imply that it's only vale is to catalog but that was it's main function at the beginning and with each new edition they have added more development functions.

It is too bad there isn't just one piece of software that fits everyone needs. but the reality is there isn't and what may be one's perfect fit is another one's mis-fit.

Download trials of all interested software and test it out for personal taste.

It depends on where you want to go with your photography. If you are leaning toward the graphic arts side of things and you can only do one or the other, then it is cs5 all the way. Lightroom also has a lot of nice features. As you may have seen from frommie76's post, lightroom has quite a bit of versatility also in addition to its' uploading and cataloging features. I have both. I start with lightroom 3 and then slam it over to cs5 for any further touch ups. Speaking of which; I prefer cs5 for doing touch ups because it offers more tools and is less constricting in its' abilities such as facial blemishes, age lines, fat butts, ect... If you do go with lightroom 3, I would recommend Scott Kelby's book on lightroom. He also has a book on cs5.
