Good morning, my name is Ron Giveans. I live in Indianapolis. I have a degree in Industrial and Commerial Photography which I earned in 1984. All film formats, cameras and processes. I have been away from photography for over 20 years. My favorite film, Ektachrome, does not exist any more. After my heart was broken by that event, I find there is a new sheriff in town, Digital. I retired in 2011 and bought a Nikon D3100. This digital stuff is, well I feel like a calf looking at a new gate. I appreciate honest critique, that is how I get better. I really look forward to being part of this forum.

Welcome Ron,
Your experience with light and exposure and the mechanics of photography will certainly make it easy for you to transition.
From the stuff you've posted, it looks like you dont really need our help. Look forward to your thoughts and photos. I love the first Champlain shot.....Beautiful.
Thank you for your words of encouragement, Rocco. That first photo was taken the first hour I started taking shots with my new camera and in trying to think I knew what I was doing set it up wrong. In too much of a hurry before I lost that eerie morning light. I have everything to learn about digital photography though.

Ron,
Since you're an "old" film guy (like most of us), you may get a chuckle from a thread here title The old days...

Rocco, thanks for the heads up. Yep! I needed the direction to that blog. It made me smile and took me back.

Rocco, I'm not so certain this will be an easy transition. My photos now have graphs, there are new words and acronyms and then the final processing after you have the shot. Who the heck would have believed "noise" was part of photography? White Balance was a little different back then, you used color cards. These new cameras are just amazing. Now if I can just learn how to adjust the exposure to create what is in my mind, I'll be a happy camper.

quote=rocco_7155 Welcome Ron, br Your experience ... (
show quote)
Its akin to learning a new language. If its not your "native" tongue, you translate in your head to something familiar. To use your example "noise" = Grain. I know your post is a bit tongue in cheek but I get it. We are RElearning which means there is a bit of UNlearning that we have to do too. Slide over, cuz I am in that boat with ya!!!

second that! Welcome to UH
I, jenny, never wrote the above comment. The 2nd and 3rd
lines at top of page are still missing, and evidently
today we don't even start at the very top of general
photog. page!!
Okay, scrolled to top of this page,3 lines are there but
no list to click into to see what people are talking
ablout today.....
If we are starting the day with new member section, where
is the rest of UH? Oh well, it was time-consuming every day
anyway..but if any more comments are posted, that i didn't write my concern would be that it was someone's unjustly
critical one such as i've seen sometimes.....
