Martin A has graciously volunteered their WPC 1335 - Labor entry for critique and analysis to find out what they could have done to make it better. Be nice, but be honest as this will help everyone with their craft. Thank you Martin A and thank you everyone!

First, I thought the subject, lighting, and composition were excellent. If the hands were the intended focus, the hand (particularly the one on photo left) could have been more in focus.

There is a Johnny Cash song "These Hands" that would perfectly fit this lovely photo. (it's on you tube)

Excellent subject for contest - the right top and right bottom darker (reduce reflection of hair on hand) - Monument of the hand and file slightly would have given action - an identifiable item being created. Perhaps a much older pair of hands would have stated the lost craft aspect better. MOO

Beautiful. The only suggestion I can make is that I'd have preferred the (subject and file) right hand razor sharp with drop off behind it. Composition is excellent.

For the most part , I too like how the photo was taken over all . I do agree with the right hand could of been in focus too. I don't know if you use any photo enhancement programs . But using Photoshop CC , I was able to take your photo and make the right hand come in focus . I can post the results I am talking about if you would like to see it . Thanks for allowing me to remember the forgotten memories when my father would use his hands to do things like this .He would spend hrs sharpening edges on different cutting tools . Thanks again for sharing your photo , QuickShooter101

I've enjoyed looking at this photo quite a bit, read the other comments, and thought about if this were my shot, and a part of my portfolio that I was showing to people to get more work, what would I change . . . I like the mood, I like the lighting, I like the grit, I like being able to see the detail in the craftsman's left hand (the one on the right side if the photo), but when I look at the other hand, it looks out of focus, it looks 'soft' and not gritty and somehow doesn't quite fit with the other one, so it looks like a mistake that you didn't catch and not intentional. Then I would wonder if I commissioned you to do a shot, would it have similar 'mistakes'? This shot is sooo close to being exceptional, for me, the focus difference on the hands is the only issue.

The softness of the focus causes me to wonder if this wasn't the result of cropping a larger image, coupled with a slow shutter speed and wide aperture, reducing the depth of field.

I thought it depicted the theme artistically, and was a very compelling image.

I am not sure what depth of field you used but I would have increased my aperture. This being said the composition is super and lighting superb. I would be interested in knowing your technical parameters :D

I really like the image the way it is, you are showing movement in the right hand with the loss of focus showing the hand is working! To show a little more action if some chips or dust was dropping from the file showing more action would of taking it to the next level.
