Hello everyone,
I have been using a Tamron AF 17-50mm 1:2.8 with my Canon 40D. I am thinking about upgrade my camera to a Canon 6D. Can this Tamron lense be used with the Canon 6D.

Also, are the grey market cameras ok to buy? They seem to have a very good discount. However, I am concerned about the warranty.

Hope you can help. Thank you.

Canon is unique in one respect on their grey market bodies. IF you buy that body from an authorized USA retailer, the one year Canon USA warranty will be in effect. If you buy from an UNAUTHORIZED or a foreign source, the Canon USA warranty will NOT be in effect. In this instance the source you obtain the body from makes all the difference in the world.

As far as Tamron compatibility, I am not sure if your lens is a "Di" model or a "Di II" model. The Di will work on both, but the Di-II is designed for crop sensor bodies, and while the Tamron Di-II lenses WILL mount and work on the 6D body, they will definitely vignette and will need to be cropped in post processing. I have personally used the Tamron 11-18mm and 18-270mm Di-II lenses on the 6D with no issues other than the vignetting.

The Tamron lens that I have is a Di II model. I thought I can save some money with the old lens.
Also, thank you for your comment regarding the grey market Canon.

Canon will not cover any grey market product. Some of the retailers will cover it themselves but, the warranty (if provided) is not through Canon. check below:
See paragraph 4. Not all retailers provide warranties on the grey market items they sell. Most do but, be sure to check. B&H and Adorama do.

Neither Canon or Nikon will even work on grey market products. They are repaired under sellers warranty and the seller does any work needed, not the manufacturer.

Please read Canons specific warranty info. So long as you have a receipt from a Canon dealer in the USA or Canada, you have a USA warranty. Canon did away with country based serial numbers when they went to the 12 digit numbering. "Grey market" bodies purchased "in the USA" will have their warranty. I have had 3 such bodies repaired by Canon direct under the USA warranty program in the last 2 months and no charges were required for any of those repairs. The warranty is based on the dated receipt from the USA seller, regardless of what B&H tells their customers. Canon USA warranties are NOT transferrable, no matter what Ebay or private sellers may tell you, all Canon warranties are valid only to the original purchaser, even if you buy that camera the next day.

Not saying you are wrong but, I did not see "grey market" anywhere in that link. We are both correct. It is up to the repair facility if they will honor it or not.

Canon USA requires a copy of the receipt for any and all warranty procedures. We do not require a copy of the warranty card.

That being said, gray market items are items that are intended for sale outside their original country of origin. So you may have purchased a camera or camcorder that was not destined for sale in the USA.

The issue would arise if, let's say, you bought a PAL version of a camcorder. The Factory wouldn't be set up to change parts on an imported PAL camera that doesn't support the native NTSC standard which is what we use here in North America. It's these types of issues that are faced when import products are sent in for service.

The Canon Factory Service Center would be the ones who determine the actual sate of the warranty, based off whether or not you have a receipt dated within a year and the repair is one normally covered, IE: not liquid, sand or impact damage.

To ensure you receive guaranteed warranty service on your purchase, we recommend only purchasing products that are designated USA products.Canon USA requires a copy of the receipt for any and all warranty procedures. We do not require a copy of the warranty card.

I live 2 miles from Canon Va. I will check out what they say this coming week. It looks like it is at the discretion of the individual repair center. I do not want to pass on incorrect info and using google it just gets confusing to say the least.
