Since you'll be packing anyway, why not take both cameras?
Later in the year I am going that way as well and am only taking my OMD.
Let us know how it went with your Lumix
People in India love to be photographed. I have had the experience of lining up on one or two people and before I could take the photo, a crowd gathered in the frame. So do whatever you have to do to shoot quickly - have exposures, fill-in-flash, zoom etc. set in advance of actually pointing your camera. Avoid manual as it takes too much time.
I was in India for a two weeks a couple of years ago and too both my D300 and my Lumix LX5. I used the Lumix about 80% of the time. There were times I missed the fast zoom but my neck appreciated not having to carry the extra weight of the D300. If I had to do it all over again I would do it the same way. I used the Nikon at the Taj Mahal and the Lumix everywhere else.

Enjoy! There is no other country in the world with as much photographic wealth as India.

If you have the opportunity be sure to visit the Caves of Ajanta. It is truly one of the wonders of the world. They are 2000 year old caves, shrines, life sized elephants and temples hand carved into canyon walls. A single cave may contain a giant statue of Buddah in the middle of the "room" and a walk around altar in the rear. Google it cuz they are too spectacular to try to describe. I do not know why they are not publicized more.
You can easily take several hundred shots there and if you are into photographing local color and living styles, you can take another 200 on the roads, byways and highways leading to it. I have been lucky enough to have seen much of the world and this is definitely one of the top five most impressive sites that I have seen.
Thank you guys for input on traveling lndia.
