It's 9-11-11 and, being a 17+ year veteran of two branches of the military, and being rarely at a loss for words, obviously, I could say a lot but being a member of that great institution, "the silent majority," I'll defer to those who get paid for talking and let my camera do my talking for me. But, just so there's no confusion, when these guys fly over, we ain't just "saber rattling." Please review these shots for me with a great deal of reverence and while you can run down my eagles, my geese, and my bluebirds, you need to be careful what you say about my T-Birds, my Air Force Falcons, my Arkansas Razorbacks, my Colorado Buffaloes, and my Denver Broncos.
:-)

Oh, and my Dallas Cowboys. Almost looks like I'm so spread out I'm looking for a fight doesn't it? Well, I'm not that serious. By the way, these shots were made handheld with EOS 20D & EOS 400 f5.6 non-IS, probably shot on 100 iso at f5.6, 1/500th. These guys are not easy to shoot. They don't hang around and pose for you. I have no idea how many shots I fired off but it was a bunch and these were the best of the bunch. There were a few more that were okay but not a lot. Problem is that when they're close enough, they're going too fast. These were shot just outside the north gate at the graduation of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. President was the keynote speaker.

Thanks. I like that one too - it speaks to the issue of perspective a little better than the other two - all kinds of perspective.

I was with you gessman until you brought up the cowboys (the official nfl team of satan  ) being a steelers fan. however the best superbowls always are pittsburgh dallas. First I wanted to say thank you for posting a 9/11 post. I was getting preety depressed that on such a somber day all people wanted to talk about was superficial things. Thank you for your military service to our country. I tried to join the navy but failed the eyesight requirements. I tell ppeople I served my country for 6 years in the war on crime as a cop. I love any shot of the t birds, especialy the one with the flag out in front. did you know that only f-16 number 5 has its number painted upside down since it is the one that flies upside down?

No sir, I wasn't aware about #5. Makes sense. I was going to get that on there much earlier but got sidetracked. I'm not all that staunch a football fan any more - just getting too old for all that excitement, but I've moved around some and it seems like a person winds up with divided loyalty when that happens. I guess some folks see it as confusion. I grew up, well, almost, in Arkansas and the nearest sports teams were in St. Louis but it wasn't until I returned from England in '62 that I became a pro football fan. Up to that point I couldn't get beyond the esprit de corps of the college teams. Then I moved to TX and locked in on the Cowboys when they started to happen and it won't go away. You're right about the Steelers and Cowboys. It's always a good one.

Thank you. Believe it or not that's one of the few things that I've done intentionally lately with my camera. Usually it's just purely spur of the moment stuff. I'd been there the year before and accidentally got the flag in a shot so when I went back the next year, I made it a point to get that flag in several shots. I thought the idea was a good one. These 3 were shot with the EOS 20D & EOS 400mm nonIS lens, handheld probably on iso 100, f5.6, 1/500th on AV.

In the second set of pictures the first two seem to evoke more emotion that the third. I like the whole flag in the picture.
I have not tried to get planes when flying. I like going to air museums and trying to get shots that tell a story.
Thank you for posting these pictures today.

Hey chapjohn, the BEST airmuseum in the world bar none is in dayton ohio at the Wright Patterson Air force Base. It is the official US AIRFORCE museum and it is beyond awesome Being from Michigan its about the only nice thing I can say about ohio  It puts the National air and space museum to shame. Now I havent seen the annex at Regan airport in dc so I cant comment but you can spend several days at wright pat.

I love the pictures, the first one my favorite but love them all, have to agree with Sinatraman though about the cowboys, being a steelers fan also. LOL. But that besides, love the pictures.

Thanks about the t-bird shots and sorry about the cowboy stuff. I'm a closet fan of most teams, 'cept the Raiders, of course, especially today. Being from Arkansas, what endeared the Steelers to me was that I figured any team that would have a good ol' Louisiana boy like Bradshaw couldn't be all bad.

Thanks. #6 may be my favorite too of the ones I posted. I can't find all of my images on this subject but I'm pretty sure that there's another shot I prefer to all others - it's one taken right before #6 and the planes are flying into, not beyond, the whole flag. The composition is better for my liking but I can't find it just now. I had these cut out for another reason and readily available to use while the others are stacked away on a cd or dvd in a plastic container somewhere.
