I have a Nikon D5000 with multiple lenses---I have one lens (Nikkor 55-200 1.4-5.6) that recently has been having problems autofocusing----it acts like it's trying to focus by going in and out of focus, but then when it decides to stop it is completely out of focus. Haven't had any trouble with any other lens so I know its not the camera, and it did used to work. Can I remedy this without having to send back to Nikon?
I had a simular problem. I used a qtip with a cleaning solution on it and rubbed the little ball bearning contacts on the lens and camera. It fixed my camera. I clean that area now.

I had a problem with focusing also. Outside everything was fine for awhile. Then the focusing started to act up. At home the focusing worked fine. The next day the same thing happened. In both instances the sun was bearing down on my camera. The lens on the camera became very warm. It's not a very scientific explanation, but I believe it was the heat.
One question: Is your focusing sensor on multiple points, or single center point? I suggest trying a single center focus point. Pushing your shutter button 1/2-way down will focus on centered subject, then you can move camera to compose before pushing button all the way to capture scene, without losing pre-set focus.
The camera was on multiple point. I'll try it on single point the next time I go out.
I think you meant f/4 and not 1.4. An f/4 lens will need good light to achieve A/F. Does it do this hunting on a sunny day?
Yes, sorry about the typo---it seems to do this on sunny and overcast days both. I will clean it thoroughly and see what happens, hopefully that fixes it but will let you know if it doesn't work!
