This was taken on the Greek island of Rhodes. I could not resist as I love the doors in Europe. Doors, windows and garden gates can be great photo ops.
Beautiful Nikonnut! Love the B&W!
Can you translate the lintel?

A lovely atmospheric shot Nikonnut.
The inscription on the lintel appears to be in Latin; however, I cannot make out enough for a translation. Your title says Monestary Door, could this have been a Convent Door instead?
I studied Latin, and passed my level III language exam in College in Latin. If you re-post this image, checking the save original box, I could very likely see the lintel inscription well enough to make a full translation. The first word "Virgo" could mean either woman, girl, virgin, etc. depending on the rest of the inscription, which is why I am wondering if this could have been a convent?
Oh, and this is a wonderful photo. I too love to collect old doors, gates and windows.
Ken
The second line reads A D MCMXX. That is likely Roman numerals AD equals after death and the MCMXX is 1920.
We need to see the photo in the download to get a better grip on the translation.
Great shoot by the way.

  Great mood lighting
I have tried to read the inscription but it is too faint. The second line is definetly AD MCMXX for 1920 Ad. The first line first work is "virgo" second word is "red" something something. Perhaps redup?? Third word is "coenor? something something.

Here is a blowup of the door lintel
BTW hoggers, this could have been a convent. When we were there there was notone about. It seemed deserted and it seem to be in excellent repair. It did not seem like something abandoned. At the time I thought it was strange. We were there with a gentleman from my company that used to be the MD of the casino in Rhodes. He had lived there for 7 years before moving to Holland to work for us. He was not sure what it was.
A further BTW, thanks to everyone that looked in on my pic. I must admit I enjoy much of what I do and it makes me feel great to know that others do as well. Thank all of you.
The second word, I am pretty sure, is "Redux", or coming together, etc. The third word is latin for Convent. I cannot make out the rest of the line.
Also, the date line just might have one or two more "X" in the date, if you look real close and gage the spacing across the lintel. Four Xs is not correct; however, it was not an uncommon usage in certain situations. So this date might be 1930 or maybe even an incorrect 1940.
I am going with convent, or home for young girls, or a school for young girls. With WWII, I would think that there would be such a need in 1940 - n'est pas?
