An interview with Tony R

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Now 58 years young, been shooting since I was 12 or so. My father gave me a used Kowa SLR and I learned to develop B&W for my Boy Scout merit badge and was hooked.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. Worked as an assistant here and there. Read what I could & now use the internet and Kelby Training. I enjoy landscape, fine art and macro.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
The pattern of the peeling paint and the contrast between the solid brick and flaking, once liquid paint. Also capturing the beauty of something people walk past without ever really observing.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Nikon D5100, available light, 16-85mm, f3.5. Hand held.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I'd punch in a little fill will a reflector and probably use a tripod to insure "tack sharp" focus.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
As a practicing professional watchmaker I'd probably spend more time restoring antique watches.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I am working on my portfolio and am considering Squarespace in the future.

Thanks for the recognition!
Tony

An interview with The Novice

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always owned a camera since high school (over 40 years ago), and I have had a P&S since the first Sony came out with a camera with floppy disk. A co-worker noticed my pics on my computer and encouraged me to buy a better camera. 2 years ago I bought a Canon EOS Rebel T3.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have had no formal training of any kind. I see everything in nature differently since I have a decent camera. I live in the country I do mostly nature work, with a few (hundred) pics of the grandchildren.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
This tree was sitting in front of property where I was trying to get a shot of an abandoned small church. It kept getting in the way, maybe to force me to take a closer look. I thought it was interesting.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I am still have not mastered the numerous numbers that accompany manual settings, so most of my work is done with Auto settings. I don't use a tripod unless I am shooting motion shots.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I would not change a thing. I use PhotoShop to crop, change subtle lighting, and a minimum amount of spot removal.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am about 9 months from retiring and would love to spend a lot more time taking pictures.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have very limited shots on my Pinterest site, suelaja/my images. UHH is the first contest\challange that I have entered, until this weekend where I entered 3 pics in a local festival art contest. I did not win a prize but I did sell two of my bird pictures. I was not aware that my work was interesting to anyone other than myself and family. I put my pics on UHH with encouragement from the same coworker that encouraged me to buy a better camera and enter the labor day weekend contest.

Thank you to Lisa.
