Canon SX 50 Hand Held Test Pictures

I have been experimenting with a new Canon SX 50 camera I picked up several weeks ago as a 2nd camera for a back up. Some of its capabilities is surprising at the least.

The 3 pictures are all hand held, the first two were taken right at dusk hand held shooting 1/8 sec at f 3.4. The 3rd picture was taken zoom of 200 x at over 100 yards at 1/1000 f 6.5. These pictures was not edited other than reduction is size to post.

I was originally considering a super tele lens for my D7000 but the SX 50 works out for wild life and birding and I have a back up camera.

Look grainy to me. To much noise from lack of light.

There are a couple of dozen UHH members who regularly post amazing photos from this super-duper camera. Welcome to the club :)

No doubt some what grainy. I was shooting a scene mode and not sure what the ISO was but considering hand holding at 1/8 sec the image stabilization is doing quite a job.

Another neat thing I found its good for. I takes place of my spotting scope. This target was of 223 cal at 100 yards. A good spotting scope will cost almost as much as the SX50.

To take those shots under those light conditions, the ISO would have been fairly high, so a bit of noise would be expected--still good shots though. Wouldn't have thought of using it as a spotting scope, but it obviously works. Probably need a spare battery for an afternoon at the range, I would think. :D

Very nice test! And what grain/noise is there can be worked on in post processing if you so desire. Many programs have 'denoise' available.

I think the shots look VERY good under those conditions!

Haven't run down a battery yet. Have been close. Have a spare battery for it.

When I use it on the range after getting sited in I will shoot about 10 rounds then zoom in and take a peak. Works real well.

Interesting. From some of the shots from other UHH members I am considering buying one myself.

Should get a chance to shoot fireworks tonight. They got rained out last night. I will shoot hand held in the fireworks scene mode for starters. Hope to post some tomorrow if we don't get rained out again.

I think a person should read more about sensors and what the size of a sensor does to a photo.
