I came across this female Belted Kingfisher perched along The Old Marsh Road in the Horicon NWR just two days before the area closes for the Fall Migration season.
Typically, I see them - they see me and the game is over.
This Kingfisher did me the favor of waiting for me to get somewhat in range and then took flight.
EXIF;
- Canon 7D w/ 100-400L Lens
- 400mm
- ISO 800
- f/5.6
- 1/8000
Pictures were taken about 1:00 PM on an extremely sunny and hot day.
Perched along the marsh road
In Flight - Wings Up
In Flight - Wings Down
Banking around to check me out

Exactly.
That's an understatement!

Great in-flight shots! I got my "lifetime" photo of one nearby eating a fish this summer. I love their mini-motor sound as much as I love their looks!

Thanks Linda,
I think that these will be my lifetime shots, I have never been able to get this close even in a boat. They just keep moving ahead as we approach them and then double back behind the boat to their fishing spot
Cornell Lab calls their sound a rattle but I like Mini- Motor better!
Thanks,
Tom
