First you need to known what head he has now so you can determined compatibility. All quick release plates are different and there are dozens of styles on the market.

It may be simpler to just get the good/new ball head WITH the appropriate plate included - which is mostly the way they come - I think !

You need one that will handle the weight of the camera and his largest lens , You also need to make sure that the tripod he has will handle a different top. Don't go to cheap (you didn't mention cost) you wouldn't want to see it crash to the ground ...Best Of Luck...

Thank you so much. No I don't want it to crash. That is why I am asking the ?. I will deal with cost after i figer out what to buy, I don't care for to cheap. It is usually a waiste of money.
