I have a tremor. Can I overcome this with a faster shutter speed ( 250th or 500th) and still use a Canon 80-200 f4l without IS.as the savings would be important to me. Thanks in advance.

A fast shutter speed can help overcome camera shake. Problems may present themselves in low light, but a tripod could help there. Is it possible to rent one before you commit?

Or even a monopod or string monopod!

It is highly unlikely to "overcome" - especially at 200mm. You could try a good monopod - that IMHO would be your best hope. I highly recommend at least a monopod - even for "normal" people at 200mm and longer ! ( no matter what shutter speed in use)

No, but you can overcome it with a tripod and remote shutter release.

I too have a tremor, just old age I guess. I take meds to control it, but at times it really gets a going. I have just relegated myself to IS lenses and mono/tri-pods. The nitwit that said the golden years are great, is nuts!

Boberic, I'm not so sure that a monopod would be but slightly better. If you are holding the pod, its going to shake. And depending on where you hold it, the shake could be amplified.
That said, In good light, there is NO reason why you would not be able to shoot at 1000th and much higher if you stay wide open, at any ISO. At those speeds, your shake should be no problem.
You can invest in a nice little travel tripod that you could carry at all times if it is still a problem, or gets worse. No remote is needed, simply use the two second delay.
If you had to use the tripod all the time, it would be like going back to manual film, where one only took the shots worth taking. Good luck. SS

Working at the railroad museum, we are often asked to take pictures of our visitors in front of one of the displays. One of the people I work with has this same problem. He has now used a "string pod" twice and, although it isn't perfect, the results have been remarkable. For less than $1.00 in parts, I strongly urge anyone with a tremor to try this simple solution. You have nothing to lose and a great deal to gain.
