Two Techniques on a Sunrise

This is not an earth shattering sunrise photo. The composition is rather boring, but I shot the sunrise 2 different ways this morning, and thought the effects were interesting. I do not expect "That's a great sunrise, Nightski". I'm looking for questions, ideas, thoughts on what I did.

The first one I used the HDR setting on my new camera in auto HDR. I let the camera auto select the shutter speed parameters.

The second I used teh HDR setting, but set my own parameters at +2.

The third is a 2 minute exposure with my 10 stop B&W screw on filter. I thought, what the heck, I have it focused already so I may as well put it on and see what happens.

I like your experimentation. That is what keeps you young.

So true  And it's just a bit of fun. I think it's interesting that the log is has better exposure in the long exposure than the HDR settings.

You're right. You would have never discovered this unless you tried it. Keep on shooting.

I like how the lake looks like a mirror in # 3. Is that a Lee 10 stop ND? I had one on order for about 9 months and finally cancelled the order.

Sorry, after re-reading your post, I see it was a B&W screw on. Nice shots though.

All nice, but I prefer the top two - toss-up.

I like it too. I am excited to do some more experimenting. No, It's a B+W SCREW on filter. the Lees slide into an apparatus, which is much more convenient. I too wanted to order a Lee, but it's out of stock, and I wanted to do this now. So, I am going to wait for the Lee one. I do want to get Lee filters. This one is a very good quality filter, but there is the inconvenience of having to focus, and then screw on the filter. I will post a running water pic I took with it.

Yes, the top ones did a very attractive thing with the sun, but think of what could be done with those effects that you get from the 10 stop. They really are great effects. Maybe not for this application, but I can think of some applications that it would work great for!

What an interesting experiment. Who would think? But the long exposure brought out so much more and the color is eerie looking, but it became a very interesting photo to look at. I like that one very much. What's your next experiment?

I don't know what your spread for the HDR was, but you cn control light/dark areas by varying the spread. Conventional wisdom is that you should shoot two or three stops over and under plus a normal exposure, but you can play with it. Like you can shoot a middle shot and then go 3 over and 1 stop under to get a different effect. It mighjt be a good way to get your log to pop.

Or big waves, or wind blowing sand? I am hoping to hear some other ideas too ;-)

Ahh... It's a new camera, and I didn't know that. I'll have to figure that out. Back to the manual. :D
