Guess I'm the first to ask the question - what are you going to use the lens for?

If you drop it, it might become unrepairable. My son found that out the hard way.
Otherwise, it seems to be a good lens, although I don't have one myself.
Thom seems to like it.

Taking a trip to the painted desert and grand canyon. I'm tired of swapping lens between the stock 50 and the 70-200mm. I thought that this would be decent compromise.

How about a used or refurbished 18-200mm?
Look like I picked a decent one that didn't break the budget. Some of the problems in review, probably won't affect me as I'm not planning on taking shots from a foot away. :~) T
The 18-200 is ideal but rather expensive for my needs. At the price I paid for the 18 - 15 the 18-200 refurbed is more than 3x the price. I admit that it would solve lens swapping almost completely. I fell into a great buy on 18 -105 new with a 90 day factory warr on it.

Pro's: Lightweight, quite sharp, excellent VR system, low price.
Con's: Lightweight, plastic mount.
Still about the best choice available in a "kit" lens.
I've had great results taken with this lens.
I think you will be pleased with the results.
If you are not shooting in low light or want to stop action that you would need larger aperture it's a great lens that will give you great pictures. Of course the constant f/2.8s are big money. - dave

Welcome to the Hog Tony. I have one on my D7000 along with a few more lenses and find my self using this one about 70% of the time. Its a decent lens with some versatility.

This "kit" lens came with my D90 several years ago. I used this lens exclusively for years and is excellent for the price. However if you mount this lens on some of the more recent, more expensive Nikon cameras, it won't be as sharp as the more expensive metal/glass lenses.
Are you saying there is some technical, or mechanical, reason why a great lens like the 18-105 3.5-5.6 will not be as sharp when used on a newer Nikon body--or that some of the newer Nikon glass is even better than the 18-105.
Frankly, don't understand how it can be the former.
I have a 18-200 lens. best investment i made in lens.
