while camping in northern colorado took this photo from opening to the sky at our campsite, 8,000 feet elevation.
stars surrounded by lodgepole pines
You stole my idea! I am going camping the first week in September and I was planning an making a shot very similar to yours. The only difference is we don't have lodgepole pines in Ontario so I will have to use Eastern White Pine.
I like the idea of using the campfire to illuminate the trees but I think I might fake it shooting a flash through an amber filter.
Thank you all for looking
Brian good luck, wanted to take some milky way photo's but it was full moon when I was camping and sometimes cloudy.
FYI - I took this at ISO - 2000, F/6.3, 30 SEC ss, 10-24mm lens at 10mm. also used remote mirror-up with a wireless release. Had the D7100 setting on a piece of cut log close to the ground.
Tried different release times but 30 seconds worked well. The moon was close to rising when I took this shot which you can see in the lower left portion of the picture. good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I have found that more than 15 seconds makes the stars appear as short lines instead of point circles. Of course that is focal length dependent.
