One major difference between PSE 11 and LR is that, like Aperture processing in LR is non-destructive, whereas PSE11, unless you do all PP on a duplicate, you cannot get back to the original photo.

I finally got my new Mac Book Pro and am turning my iMac and the entire den over to my wife. I had been working in Aperture which I grew increasingly less fond of. So, to get away from Aperture I bought PSE 11. Then I read on the hog that the organizing capabilities of Lightroom were not to be missed. Needing order in my photo life more than anything, I bought LR 5. I'm installing them both on the new computer, but don't know which to concentrate on first. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Get Phil Steele's online video course, Learn Lightroom Now, very inexpensive and well done.

I voted for LR as the first program to learn because it has the better (in my opinion) filing system. LR also provides at least 90% of the editing capabilities needed. If more is needed, like adding text or cloning, then do that in Elements. JMHO...
You are basically saying the same thing that I am but if one is just starting out and wants to do some "artsy" stuff, then elements is the way to go.

Another good reason as is Malcombs. Further- LR was designed as a foundation, a gateway, to other post processing programs. As has been said already LR does nearly everything one needs. If more is needed it is designed to enable easy export to other programs and will easily accept the further processed image back into its cataloging alongside the original that was exported to the other program. ;)

I got photoshop elements first, and now I'm getting lightroom. I wish I had gotten lightroom first because I was frustrated with the PSE organizer --but that was several versions ago. It may be better now. If you do decide to get PSE first, I'd recommend waiting until Sep or Oct because the new version 12 is due to be released then. (They're updated every year). Also, for either program, I'd recommend checking out ed2go.com for online training programs. Especially for PSE, I found that it was the best way for me to learn it in depth.

By the way, more and more people whom I talk with when visiting their booths at art shows tell me that they use LR and Photoshop. But most say LR is the major app. And most of these these people seem to get it right when shooting so they just seem to make minor adjustments later. Comments?

Everybody makes great points here. I just think that if one is a novice to pp, they should start with elements, then grab lightroom at a later time when they are comfortable.

Anytime you ask a question like this, always someone will tell you something else is better because that is what they use.
You should have tried PSE11 first and if it did what you wanted it to do, and were happy with it, stay with it and save your money. Light Room does not have layers, while PSE does. Now you will become frustrated by trying to use both.

Lightroom makes no changes to your remotely stored image, only applies a recipe of adjustments to an attaché file (.xmp).
Photoshop (&elements) make destructive changes to pixels. There are methods to make PS adjustments non-destructive. Example ACR is same as LR.
Therefor do all work possible in LR first.
There are times when PS is required as described above (panoramas, content aware, etc. Then "save" sends a .tiff file back to LR.
Export opportunities in LR are neglected and worth exploring.

Yes absolutely but if you save your file as a PSD with the layers, then if you want to go back and do more work or change the work you've done, it's easy. So doing this is non-destructive.

Lightroom without a doubt.........I have both LR5 and Elements 11 and I haven't even used Elements yet cause I just don't need it. I also use the NIK Collection of LR PlugIns.

Hence, my comment that Lightroom should be learned first. Quonnie answered the question for himself. I have PS11 too, and there is no way I would let it manage my photo catalog.

Another thought Quonnie, I took a class on Lightroom at my local community college, instead of "doing it yourself" with Youtube videos, why not signup for an online class, I know there are many available. The key to lightroom is how you handle the initial import, (this is where lightroom stores your original files) - The cataloging inside the program is awesome, with groups, headers, markers, its wonderful
