Looking for a beginner type lighting kit for my home studio. There are so many online - some quite inexpensive so that alone makes me wonder about the quality of the gear. I would like to get a kit with soft boxes (2) a boom light (if you all think that would be key) and a background stand and some muslims (green, black at least). Any thoughts on some good manufacturers and where to find them? Thanks!

check out bhphoto.com. If they don't have it, it don't exist. I've used some of their store brand and no they don't have all the bells and whistles but they do hold up.

Thanks, Kim!! This is just what I've been looking for. I don't do much portraiture, but when I do, I need backdrop and lights. This will work great. I already ordered it.

Go to You Tube and check the diy on photo lighting. I used some of their ideas and added some of mine and came up with good set up for very little money. P.C. pipe is good to build you soft box frames and a frame to hang your back drop on. I used clamps that you can find in a hardware store for attaching my back drops so the can be changed easily. It can be done easily with some imagination and using other peoples ideas. My favorite reflector is a metal garbage can lid spray with gold paint and mount on a tripod. If you p.m. I can send you some p pics

Don't mean to be picky, but Muslims might object to being used for backgrounds in photos. I think you meant musliN. Maybe it was just a typo.

Most of the suggestions here seem to be for continuous lighting but if you're interested in flash check out strobist.blogspot.com there you will find information on using small manual speedlites/strobes and a number of equipment suggestions as well.
Oh, and to defend the suggestions; continuous lighting can be quite a bit cheaper than flash. However, the Strobist site concentrates on mostly less expensive units.
