These are some shots I took last Thursday night, some are a little soft on focus but over all I'm pleased with my first attempt at this type of photography.
Make everyone use a brightly colored kayak. #2 is my favorite.

Which one(s) do you think is/are soft?
In #1 I can count the hairs in his beard, and the paddle logo is very sharp.
#2 is sharp where it was focused.
f4 is probably not enough depth of field.
#3 Same as #2. Sharp at the focus point. Look at the logo on the paddle.
#3 in the first set is my favorite, I was actually out there a couple weeks ago getting more images.

Looks like the Nantahalla?
Most of your shots look underexposed to me. Remember, the white of the froth will fool your exposure meter just like snow does. Increase exposure by about 1 1/2 stops and you will get better results. Additionally, your first series is backlit which may require even more compensation.
You've done a good job of capturing the peak of the action. In the future, you might try getting the facial expressions of the paddlers too!
Yeah, I've learned a lot since those were taken. I've since started using a gray card, have way better equiment and much much better understanding of how to take pictures. With that being said, I still have a lot to learn and will definitely take your advice and try it out.
These were taken at the U.S White Water Center in Charlotte.
