Eagle with fish in flight.
I was waiting for a kingfisher to come and sit on my perch..turned my head and there was this guy. I did not see him coming and I was not prepared for a "bird-in-flight" with my settings and I just got three quick shots off. I would have been happier with the focus a little more on but I thought they would still be fun to share.

WOW Marsha! That's exciting! You did well with this first year Bald Eagle.

How do you know he's a first year? I was thinking more like 3 years but only because of the tail feathers looking a little white. What should I be looking for?
Oh...and thank you.

Several things tell me it is a first year bird. First, the bill is all black; second and third year birds begin to show some yellow. (Don't include the fleshy part at the base of the bill called the cere.) The chest and back are plain, pale brown; second and third year birds would show significant amounts of white mottling. Second and third year birds show a pale cap and dark eye stripe with that of the third year bird being quite distinctive.
All first, second and third year birds will show some white in the tail feathers.
Here is a link to a site that has some good photos of the various ages:

Thanks and I'll check out the link. I had a feeling about more yellow showing. I kept looking at the bill and thinking that it didn't look right. Something was missing. Well, just the yellow color. I have juvis around here all the time. That's a good thing. Thanks again...most helpful!
That's some great shots Marsha for not being prepared. Where you in your blind?

Thanks Bill. Yes, I was in my blind. Can't wait for a little cooler weather though.
Very, very nice series. Definitely worth posting. Thanks for sharing.
You mentioned that you weren't ready for BIF shots. I set my "user" modes (U1 & U2) so that I am ready for BIF or a bird sitting. One click of the dial and I'm ready. If I want a third option of settings, I set M totally different. You probably already know this but for me I often can't see the forest for the trees. lol Again, thanks for sharing. I admire your work & enjoy viewing it.

I do exactly what you have described. I just wasn't looking in the right direction...head turned to my left...when I turned and looked out at the river, there was the eagle already picking up the fish so, I just started snapping the camera. It happened so fast that I did not even think to turn to U1.
My settings on camera were for more of a still shot. (Waiting for a Kingfisher to come to my perch.)
I would be curious though as to your settings for BIF mode? Thanks for the nice comments!

I've been surprised the same way too many times and forget to flip from U2 to U1. I have U2 set for aperture priority, f8,AF-S single point and ISO 400 for still type shots. I will fine tune for weather conditions.
For BIF with clear sky to light clouds I've been using shutter priority at 1/1250, ISO 400 and AF-C with 9 point dynamic area and I also have +0.7 EV set. If it's cloudy, I up the ISO to 800 and up the EV to +1.7 or higher if needed and sometimes have to lower SS to 1/1000. I always save the new settings for the day or until conditions change. I have to give BirdPix all the credit for steering me in the right direction.

Thanks for the helpful post. I'm always learning.
Yes, I agree that Birdpix is most helpful! He gave me some great info on stopping hummingbird's wings in flight.
Are you using a Nikon?

Yes, Nikon. D7000, D200 & D90. Older Nikon AF lenses, 80-200 f2.8, 300 f4 & 105 Micro Nikkor & Nikon AF-s 18-200 Also have the Sigma 150-500 but still struggle to get consistently sharp images.
Still trying to get my image quality close to yours and a few others. Again, thanks for sharing your work. It keeps me motivated.
