My grandson spotted this growing on a tree as we were driving by. First time I ever saw one quite like this.
A type of shelf fungus, aka bracken.

Beautiful shelf or bracket fungus. It looks like it is shaped to collect rain water efficiently with the upwardly oriented shelves. Is that a pine tree?

No, it's not a pine. Oak? I'd have to go back and look again, but I'm pretty sure it was a deciduous tree.

Beautiful fungus and picture! I'm facinated by fungus and I'm not sure why!

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks. For a change, I could photograph a fungus that didn't have me down on my knees, though my grandson did try to get some shots lying on his back. Good idea, but he's got a ways to go before he gets everything right, like focus...

Is 'Bracken' a local name for this fungus? We have lots of bracken in our part of the world, but it is a fern. According to Wiki it is the most widely spread fern in the world.
(Not trying to be clever, just like to learn.)

I think "bracket" and "shelf" fungus are synonyms for the same kind of fungi which grow as a series of shelves. I've seen "bracken" fungus applied to fungi growing in association with ferns, but they would be different. I guess Scotland must be a great place for ferns, like the Northwest regions of US.

I tried looking up these terms, and the closest I came to that image was a sulfur bracket fungus which, supposedly, is found in Europe, not Ridgefield, CT. "Bracken" by itself is, as nairiam said, a type of fern. There is a type of "bracket fungus," but clearly not the same thing.
Have one kinda like that in my yard but it is a different color.
