I was finally able to render the background completely black in the middle of the day. The fact I was in the woods helped a great deal.

If you use additional lighting, that is easy to do...Set your shutter speed at it's sync, set the aperture at like F16-F22 & use the flash as your source of illumination....You do need to get close & also use a flash with variable power settings..Great capture on the last image...

Thanks all. I am getting better at it. I've been using my T2i, but I'll have to try my 7D as I heard it has high speed flash sync(???). I'm not even sure if this would help the situation.
