Hummingbirds.
These make the wife very happy when they show up in the spring, and very sad when they leave in the fall. These guys are some of the hardest subjects I've attempted. These are cropped quite a bit.
nice , great job on that first photo
Thank you all. It was just as much fun as it was frustrating.
I just tried to get them also this last weekend, they are hard little buggers to capture. But like you said it was fun and frustrating. Good job!
I think these are awesome! Would you mind sharing with me the settings you used on your camera to achieve such great shots? I hardly ever see any hummingbirds at my house but I'd like to see if I can get some shots if I ever see them lol
Great pics! Actually, that guy is a female Rubythroated hummer.
I know the patience you need in trying to photograph these little birds.Practice doesn't always make perfect pictures but a lot of good luck helps.Well done.

Sure. I had a feeder that had all the holes but one covered with a towel, or tin foil. It moved even from the slightest breeze, so I tied a string from it to the railing. I had the 400mm f/5.6 on a 7D set up in my livingroom. I shot through an open window. I had a flash on a stand with a 5x7 softbox. I think it was 1/8 power. Shutter speed to 1/250 (sync speed). Lastly, I shot between 100-800 ISO, and f/5.6 to f/11. I tried AF and MF, frustrated by both. When I used MF, I'd AF on him(her) while sitting still on the feeder, then turn AF off. I only ended up with 3 or 4 that I liked out of 500+. Have fun.
Oh wow! I will definitely keep all that in mind if I decide to try shooting hummingbirds. I actually saw one this morning in the front yard and thought of this post lol! It was only there for about two seconds and then flew off :(
