Nikon Film SpeedLight to Digital Camera?

Hey Guys, I'm still here, just been sitting in the background while the Trolls try to hurt Sarge and all.

Anyway, finally decided to get above my P510 and ordered a D5200, with the 18-55 and the 55-300. This is my first Digital SLR! I previously owned a couple of Canon SLR's and then upgraded to the Nikon N8008s, maybe 20 years ago.

Anyway, I have a Nikon Speedlight SB-25 that I used on that N8008s very successfully.

I am wondering if that will work on my new digital d5200? Would it be capable of TTL exposures on the new camera?

Keep the jokes coming Sarge and everyone! I look at them every day!

Gary

I would be very careful with that and check first what voltage output you've got with that old flash. Some of them older units voltage can be too high and fry the circuits in your DSLR.

Yes, google voltage outputs for flash. Somebody has compiled lists of most flashes. If you are very near the threshold, I wouldn't even take a chance.
The Yongnuo 560 is only about $60 and I'm sure it will blow that Nikon clear back to Japan !! SS

Won't work in ttl mode but you can use auto or manual.
From Nikon's website. They might know a thing or two about this.

It does need to be updated though.

It is better to be safe than sorry.

Yongnuo makes excellent speedlights. I own a Nikon SB-600 for my macro illumination. When time comes for another speedlight, it will probably be a Yongnuo 565-II or so.

Sorry, I can't speak as to TTL, but with a 3.68VDC trigger voltage, the SB-25 should operate quite safely on your camera.

A lot of people seem to like the idea of using old accessories on new modern camera equipment. Personally I don't like the idea. It's like buying a nice new 300HP Mustang and putting vintage Volkswagen Beetle tires on it to save money. Yes, you can get them to work, but you will degrade the performance that you paid for when you purchase that modern piece of equipment. But you also take the risk of damaging your equipment with the vintage accessory.

You might want to look at http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html, the reference I use for trigger voltages. It says the SB-25 is completely safe with digital cameras. I often use the SB-15 with my D-800 and D-3 with no problem. According to their info, the only Nikon flash that is problimatical is the SB-8E.
