I just ran across a tutorial on sharpening and noise reduction in Lightroom. I have had decent results with the sharpening and noise reduction tools in LR. But, I never really knew when I was over or under using them.
Many of you experienced users probably knew this, but all you have to do is hold down the "Alt" key while you use the sliders to sharpen, mask, do details, and/or do noise reduction. By holding the alt key down, the image turns to a black and white outline and you can see which pixel areas are being affected. It' amazing what I have been able to get out of photos using this-and how it can keep you from over-using the tools.
I didn't discover it on my own. I found it here:
http://photographylife.com/how-to-properly-sharpen-images-in-lightroomThe author is Nasim Mansurov. I have Scott Kelby's book on LR, but Mr. Mansurov's explanation is much more detailed. I have no connection to him or his website, but I plan to return there to learn more.
(I have LR 5, not sure what other versions have this tool.)

This is a great tool. It is sort of an alternative to high pass or luminosity mask sharpening in Photoshop though a lot easier and faster. I would never sharpening in LR without it. Glad you found it!
