I am considering a trip to that area this year to ride the tail of the dragon with my husband and see the fall leaves. I looked up in the farmers almanac and it looks like mid November will be the best time this year. Good luck and be sure to post photos

Depends on your elevation, rain fall amounts and hope a voilent storm doesn't defoliate an area in it's prime ( Skyline drive last fall ). North Carolina mts. usually peak around the 3rd week in October.
I went to college outside of Chattanooga. Seems that the second week of October was always beautiful. Wait until mid Nov and you miss the colors.

Believe this fall will be several weeks early. Here in Rochester Hills MI, I have a red maple that has some red leaves already, and many maples including mine have leaves dropping. For this area it is at least three weeks early.

As has been said it will vary with elevation. From my experience the third week in October has been a good target for the western NC/East TN area. If your schedule is flexible, both TN and NC have websites that report the fall foliage colors regularly that will help you plan your trip. Others in that area may offer more specific advice.
Suppose we are going to have to change plans time wise thanks Bill as I have learned from your question! Who knows maybe we will see you there!

Usually mid to late Oct is safe but this is not a normal year as we have had lots of rain. Suggest you check wlos.com, a local Asheville TV station. The post leaf reports and suggest which roads to travel for the best leaves. The leaves are elevation sensitive with higher elevations starting earlier and lower coming in later. Places like Sams Gap on the NC/TN border could peak in late Sept, early Oct. Good luck. We came in one year late Oct, leaves were beautiful, stormed that night, next morning trees were bare. Still had a good time.

About the 3rd week of September, things should be changing.
For many years we have spent the 2nd or 3rd weeks of October in Gatlinburg,TN and Cherokee, NC. Always enjoy the Fall colors and haven't been disappointed yet. Be sure to take pictures (though I guess I didn't really have to say that, did I? ;o) )
