An interview with ygelman

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I began serious photography about four years ago.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training; I look for subjects that interest me -- briefly shadows and curves over surfaces.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Bridges attract me; the lone, small, woman was the punctum in the scene with the empty sky behind her. Without the woman, the scene would not have been so interesting.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Hand held Canon 5DII.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
My web site http://www.ygelmanphoto.com

An interview with gessman

I wasn't expecting this one either. Cheers.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Started when my three sons were small taking shots of them playing Little League sports. They're 52, 51, and 46 now.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training just a lot of self directed study. I usually focus mostly on critters in the woods and sports but have been trying to branch out some lately, ever the aspiring amateur.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I heard on TV weather the night before that it was predicted to get down to 20 below zero and knew that with snow on the ground there would be some good shots out there.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Canon EOS 20D and EF 28-135 IS lens, iso 100, f/10, 1/320th @ 28mm.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Might have used a tripod but other than that, I don't think so. Maybe pick a warmer morning.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Moan and grown a lot and be very discontented.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Just threads I have started here on uhh.

AN interview with wowbmw

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Been serious since my retirement 5 years ago

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Taken many classes and webinars over the years.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Wanted to apply several design elements including the use of negative space to produce a high impact image.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
Shot with a Canon7D, Canon 60 macro lens on my table top against a black backdrop. Used a 7 watt light on the flower.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I worked this composition and this was my favorite of the bunch.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I would have to discover another area where I felt the passion I feel as a photographer.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have finally started a website. You can see my progress at

An interview with ocbeyer

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Used to fool around with 35mm back in high school and then through the eighties. My dad was somewhat into it, slides of vacations etc. I used to inherit his old gear (still have it).

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
Took on semester in college, all B&W film, mostly about developing and printing. I like to take pictures of anything but mostly nature, I guess.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
It was a gray dull day, we took a day trip to a place we had never been, it was hot, buggy, muggy and the place was ho-hum. She scrambled (foolishly, I thought) across the rocks and onto this rickety pier and just stood there in her typical stance, watching and thinking (I tell her that her Indian name is "Stands with hands on hips". I snapped the shot, a throw away, just because it was so typical of her. Never really gave much more thought to it at the time.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
In this case I was shooting with an Olympus E-3, with the 14-54 2.8-3.5 at 14mm wide open, probably 100 ISO. Program mode.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
Nothing. Not this time. Very rare for me.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
For a hobby? I like to hike, bike, garden, read, listen to music, cook. Travel. But I do most of that with a camera in my hands.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

I live in Essex, Md., so I know Turkey Point, Turkey Point Rd. is a favorite bike ride, the park there I have been to often and played guitar overlooking the bay. Strange clouds that day in your photo...
