This orb weaver had woven a beautiful web from a gate in my backyard over to the side of the house. It was extremely windy when I took these shots this morning, but she had been there since yesterday and I had hoped to take some better shots when the wind died down closer to sunset. However... we have our lawn mowed on Friday's, and a very nice young man thought he was doing me a favor when he tore down the web and mashed the "ugly" spider. I just wanted to cry. It won't happen again now that they know I'm into macro.
RIP little one.

Susan: I had a female survive the winter by living near a porch light on my front porch-- I though she had froze when the temp dropped to the twenties. She lived long enough to give birth in the spring. I have many orb weavers around my yard.

That is so neat. I used to see them on my front porch. It is covered and has 3 nice pillars. They would make their webs between the pillars. They haven't done so for the past 2 years though. I don't know why. If they did, I'd be tempted to leave the porch light on for their warmth all winter too, now that you've shared your story.
