Last night at 10:30pm, I heard an owl. Getting dressed and grabbing my camera on this dark night, I set the ISO to 12800 and selected shutter priority and ventured to the wood. The hoots guided me; I soon got this shot. I know, I know...but hey, look at his eyes. If anyone can improve my night skills, let me know. But hey, the night WAS DARK!

Fascinating. What were your camera settings? Could software ( I use LR5) have cleaned up the noise?

I don't know...ISO set very high, it was very dark...shutter priority selected, handheld.

For the conditions this is a good shot. Many would have missed the opportunity and not ventured out.

These look like Great Horned Owls. Good catch! Were they hoo-hoo-hooing?

If this was shot in JPEG and not RAW format,as I suspect, then I don't think it would be possible to mitigate the effects of the noise in Lightroom. That is another reason for shooting in RAW format.

I understand about not using a tripod Jim! I can't imagine how to use one, actually...so many of my shots are ones I just happen to see and need to shoot right away..no time for a tripod! Thank you for your service, too! My hubby was a Corpsman and now our son is one stationed now at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
