Now, you know...
Phil
The military and many corporations also have a slew of acronyms. Boeing actually has an "Acronym Server" where if you're at a loss for what some series of letters means you can look it up. They do (or at least used to) allow users to add new ones as they came into general use.
Some years ago I got an email with the acronym BOHICA with instructions if you didn't know what it meant to go to the server to decode it. I did and laughed loudly when I learned that it meant, "Bend Over Here It Comes Again". I passed the email on to several coworkers and within 30 minutes I started getting replies that "it wasn't on the server, so what does it mean?" Seems that someone somewhere didn't see the humor and had it removed. I've never seen it back on there either.
Geek-Tech and Military are very proficient at creating acronyms...
But, since those creep into everyday usage, they are everywhere..
I remember an episode of MASH when Hawkeye mentioned that he was going to have RADAR fire off a letter to NINCOMPAC..
I had to laugh...
here's one of those "public" acronym generators...

I used to have a hat with BOHICA on it. Nobody knew what it ment except one person I met at the wifes' family reunion. He looked at it and siad +You must have been in the military+
