The problem with writing about religion is that you run the risk of offending sincerely religious people, and then they come after you with machetes.

Leave religion out of these discussions. It brings out the people that think their way is the only way, and how someone else thinks is wrong.

I hate to be the one to break this to you but if you don't think you are right about things that you believe, then you aren't thinking clearly...nobody believes things that they think are wrong.

Everyone has beliefs about everything, and hopefully they don't think that they are deceived while they believe them. lol....

rpavich; Of course, the problem arive when they try to impose to another that not believe its beliefs; if someone exposed a belief and is not capable to demostrate, then he or she are not so sure if it is wrong or right.
Conviction is proper of Comunism, not to thruth.

Why do people so fervently defend their beliefs? In a word fear. They fear the truth.

The sane human cannot believe in something that he or she knows to be false. It is the way our mind works. Once a belief is shattered by truth it ceases to have meaning or carry any weight. My favorite example is the story of Santa Claus. As children we believe in the magical story of a jolly toy maker that visits us while we slumber. However, once the logical mind of the child matures to a point where reason takes over and the realization of the truth takes hold. Santa is lost forever. As adults we perpetuate the myth of Santa to our offspring to not only to entertain them but to remind us of the wonder we knew as children.

Jesus is the same as Santa. It is a story based on once living man. Over the centuries the myth has grown but it is still like the Santa story merely a myth. People go to great ends to spread their beliefs in order to shore up their own faith in the story. Sadly it like all religions is just a story, a myth passed from one generation to the next. Thankfully, the past one hundred years has given us an increase in critical and logical thinking that will lead forward as a species removing the prejudices caused by different belief structures. Without religions there will be less to fight over.

I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.

Why do people so fervently defend their beliefs? ... (show quote)

This is why I am not so worry about God is to far of you and me beside he don't worried about us.
You know the God Iam very worried is this one to near of us.
obviously the founding fathers were not good intentional, or were very ingenous,
In drafting the Constitution they said:
Before our " Rights" The Constitution enumerated or allocated power among those that make policy judment( the legislative), those that implement and propose new initiatives (the executive), and those that resolve disputes and render interpretation(the judicial) .

The funders understood that tyranny con only be avoided if no one person or group comes to possess the power to make, enforce, and interpret the law. Even more insightfully, the powers separated by the Constitution are prediposed to remain separate. Of course they forgot the nature of man, and forgot to write " no person which are graduate in school of law or university cannot participate or be candidates in thoses branch of government as (legislative or executive).

But everyone tries to impose their belief on others...even if that belief is that religious people shouldn't impose their beliefs on others...

Frequently that's not something everyone recognizes.

My Church teaches - We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own consience, and allow all men the same privilege, let the worship how, where, or what they may. - Dave
