To flash....or not to flash?...that..

..is the question. Both shots taken with the same camera....lens and settings. Only difference is using the on-camera flash.

Prefer none flash! Or such a small amount that you hardly notice it. It always seems to flatten the scene and make it appear like a display. Takes away the naturalness of the image.
Bret - I've never handled a D5100. Is there flash exposure control on that model? (Flash Exposure Compensation in the Canon terminology). The shot benefits from the flash, but the amount of flash needs to be dialed down to half or less full power. The butterfly might not wait for this adjustment ...
edit - I just saw someone else say 'yes' on the D5100. It takes some practice but a really nice feature of the more advanced models that makes the oncamera flash much more useful.

I love what you do with that 200mm lens, Bret. I'm a beginner but love the rich colors in #1. Both shots are beautiful.

After downloading there is no question in my mind Bret, the detail in the second shot is outstanding. Well done!
At the risk of starting a really "animated" discussion... I'm wondering... Would this picture possibly benefit from hdr? I too like the color in #1 but appreciate the detail in number 2. If my limited understanding of photography is on point wouldn't hdr give you the best of both? I realize that SOME on this forum are gnashing their teeth for even suggesting such a preposterous action but please refrain from making your rude comments. I'm just trying to get a better understanding.

Not to flash, but I'd raise some of the shadows and midtones in PP, as well adding some clarity.
I could upload my edit if you like...
This is what I was referring to in my above post...I think there was a slight vignette added to tone back the stone and isolate on the butterfly
