Ok, I finally paid for my new macro lens today. So, it will be delivered soon. They offered me to pay extra $70 for a year protection plan (Best Buy). Just want people opinion whether I should have my quiet expensive lens protected or not necessarily. Extra $70-150 is not that huge money but neither very small, considering the fact I borrow part to finally buy this lens. Thank you d'advance.

50 years ago I worked for sears when they were first starting extended warranties. If we sold one we got 25% for selling them. I figured that they must be making a lot of money and would not be fixing many washing machines etc. I decided then that they were not a very good desl.as rip off. If I had bought every extended warranty I have been offered over the years I would be out severely thousand dollars. Most lenses have a very good warranty most five years. Take a look and see if you are getting much from the Best Buy extra. I would just say no. Just my Not So Humble Opinion. - Dave

Agree with Dave. Take care of your gear and it will last forever. I have some Nikkor lenses that are 15+ years old. Some(in this digital age) have doubled in value.

Depending on what you paid for it, you might want to consider a rider on your homeowner's insurance policy. That will cover theft and accidental damage at a greatly reduced deductable. The cost would be substantially less than $70/year.

If you read in various complaint departments, the greatest amount of bitching comes from extended warrantee coverage. Will they or won't they. I wouldn't touch ANY extended warrantee. MHO. DJT

Many companies with the optional extended warranties make a lot of money from this coverage. Best Buy is one of them and they will offer coverage on anything they can. If you take it out sometimes you may come out good if needed but most electronics things if they are going to fail will be withing the warranty period. If I took an extended warranty out I would make sure it covers accidental damage with no deductible.

It's five years if you mail a copy of the warranty card to them.

Most credit cards have an extended warranty included if you purchase using the card. The last time I used cash, it was to buy some ice cream.

Whenever I purchase a product and the sales team offers an extended warranty, I look them in the eyes and explain that they sold me on this product by stating it was the best out there. If so, why then do I need an extended warranty! SILENCE

The warranty works just like insurance. You are purchasing it because you think something will happen. They are offering it because the proof is on their side that it will not in the time frame of the warranty.

I have never known a single person who collected on his life insurance. :D
