I am using Adobe Photoshop 6 software at home to edit photos. I am taking a course titled Photoshop for Photographers and we are using CS5.1 in class. what is the difference between CS5 and adobe Elements. I want to upgrade but can't afford the full version of Photoshop.

You may want to look at a students price for the PS CS5. This is a link http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Adobe?cat=1&uumc=550517&utm_source=search&utm_medium=paidsearch&sissr=1 to one of them. There are other stores on the Internet that offer student prices too. Arnold

First of all, for what you do and can afford, you might be able to stick with 6. CS5 is about seven versions and ten years newer. The main disadvantage in using 6 is that you will have a hard time finding on-line help and tutorials for it. Your toolbox is smaller and with fewer labor-saving innovations.

I have used PS since 4. I am not a power user by any means and feel that you can stay one or two versions behind. Some of the tools CS5 has that 6 does not are content-aware fills, healing brushes, mini-Bridge, better masking tools, and a panorama tool.

Look around for tutorials that do things you currently do. Then, figure out how to do the same thing in 6. This way, you can see the differences in ways things really matter to you. Or watch how your classmates do things. You may be surprised how much easier things are now although the product does require a lot of learning.

I like the advice above: get the student discount.

You might want to look at Photoshop Elements it is up to version 10 it works very similar to CS5 you don't get the 3D stuff and many things as a photographer you won't have a need for. Xmas special keep show up with price around $49.00
