My accident happened at 10:00am - I was driving a motorcycle going around a slight curve in the road and tried to avoid being hit by a car that was on my side of the center lines. I hit some gravel on the side of the road, went into a ditch, came out and hit a tv cable box. I have been paralyzed from the waist down for the past 27 years from that accident. The driver of the car was never caught. Don't know if he/she was texting or just not paying attention to their driving or what they were doing. Their eyes were definitely not on the road - that's for sure.

This was an excellent video but I wonder how many it will really reach. There's always that saying "it'll never happen to me". Well, I always thought that too - but it did - and it wasn't even my fault.

Simply put - pay attention.

Sorry to hear that, those at fault are often not held responsible. I too was struck by a car (from behind) putting me and my bike on the pavement the hard way. I was lucky, got away with only some minor scrapes and bruises. The driver stopped, seems after hitting me he went into a ditch, preventing him from running, but he had no insurance and left me holding the bill.

Glad you made it out alive, sorry for the loss of the use of your legs though.

Good habits are hard to make.. Bad habits, very easy...

When I was in the Navy, before every holiday, we would be shown those "Death on the HiWay" type films, documentaries that showed gruesome accidents with lots of actual carnage. The point was to shock us into being more careful, at least for the coming long weekend.

It seemed to help.

But, memories are short.

It simply takes repetition of this type of info to get the point across.

That's why this "film" is being distributed free to thousands of public schools.

And as they say, we never do what we need to do, only what we want to do...

Sadly, too many horrific experiences need to take place before those affected realize a simple act of being responsible before the event could have prevented it and "want" to be more responsible.

I sympathize with your you event, been under at least three cars because of tuning in front of me while I was on a bike. Another turned in front of me while I was in a new car, which was totaled. They just DON'T WANT to see.

But could you explain how 27 years ago they were texting?

Sorry - looked it up - texting didn't start til Dec 3, 1992. So I guess they just weren't paying attention. I'm not as up to date on all this technology junk as I probably should be. Since I don't need it or use it, I don't need to be. I'd been riding for 20 years before so I knew very well how stupid some people in vehicles can get. As a matter of fact, the only ones I never had any incidents with were tractor trailer drivers. Probably because they see the same type.

Picky, picky I might be, but picky, picky makes it accurate.
He is blaming something on an event that couldn't have been around at the time he claims. So another accident is calked up to texting when it doesn't deserve the accolade.
It's one thing to make a mistake while speaking; aka slip of the tongue. But when put in writing, one has the ability to proof read and make accurate corrections. Speaking is temporary, writing is forever.

I see you are deliberately looking to cause a problem in being Mr Perfect. People like you are a dime a dozen. Mistakes are made - what makes us all humans. You are the kind that'll make a mistake and use every stupid excuse you can find to be right.

Why are you making such an issue out of a mistake I made? For gosh sakes, get a real life.

The party blowing this out of portion is not me. I just asked a simple question of verifying a stated fact by you and that's it. I am a forgiving person, and you are correct, "we are human and humans make mistakes"; and indirectly you have answered the question by saying you made a mistake. That should have been it. But no, you start insinuating because someone caught you in a mistake, which wasn't my intention but only to get verification of stated facts, they are (a type of dime a dozen.) (Mr. Perfect) ("You are the kind that'll make a mistake and use every stupid excuse you can find to be right.") Sorry, you are totally wrong.
At no time did I attack you! Actually, the shoe is on the other foot. Usually, people who make claims of others without knowing them are really looking in a mirror, and the statements they make are a reflection of how they see themselves. This is sort of like pointing a finger at someone and having 3 point back at themselves. You need to cool your jets.

A new app has been developed that disables the ability to text once the phone is in the car. I think this should be standard equipment on all cars.

I agree with you...his reply was quite unnecessary...especially since you added "not paying attention".
