Does the Nikon 18-200mm VRII lens come in 2 versions? One for full frame sensor camera and one for cropped frame sensor? I am trying to find out if the online vendor is truthful. I am buying one for my Nikon D40 and the rep told me the one I had ordered was for the full frame and sold me one with a higher price. Thanks.

Checking Nikonusa.com shows only 1 18-200 VRII and it's a DX format lens.

There's only been two versions made by Nikon and they were both considered DX format superzooms. 1st version 2005-2009 called VR, second version 2009+ called VRII. Only difference in the VRII is the addition of a lock button to keep the zoom from creeping out when you're carrying it, slightly different graphics and some sort of "super integrated coating" to help reduce flare and ghosting. All else remains unchanged. The original version wouldn't be around anymore new.

I'm thinking I may have been "taken" by the website that sold me this lens. After placing my order and paying with AMX I received an email saying they needed more info before processing my order. I called and it took a long time before a live body answered, then he transferred me to someone else. Another long wait. I was told their AMX processing was down for 2 months and I would have to pay with another card. Before long the rep wanted to know what camera I had. I told him and he said the lens I ordered wouldn't fit and I would have to have the "other" version for $80 more. I was hesitant but said ok. Does this sound like a scam to you? I'm anxious to see exactly which lens they send me.

Well something sounds fishy. The only "fit" issue is the "mount type" that yes, does need to be the right one for your camera. Pretty simple though, Nikon mount fits Nikon camera, Canon mount fits Canon camera, etc. Now that said, you can get 3rd party lenses like Sigma or Tamron that will offer the different types of mounts that are compatible with the major brand of cameras. There shouldn't be a price difference for the different mounts. Nikon and Canon lenses as far as I know do not offer different mounts for other brand cameras.

The only thing I could think of, to make it not a scam, is if the first lens was an older af lens. He asked what model you had to determine of you have a built in focusing motor.
After determining that you did not, he pointed you towards the VRII.

Even if this is the case, he should have explained things clearly.

I think you have been scammed. Contact your credit card companies and get it fixed. There is no reason that the first lens should not fit if it is Nikon. Go to Adorama, B&H of Amazon. Fair prices and reliable.

SCAM ALERT

Please let us know which supplier it was after you get it returned etc. This is a scam without a doubt. Asking for another credit card is the give away here.

Unscrupulous mail order places do not like AmX since it costs them more to process. And they are hoping you will then provide themwith your next most active card number which is, more often than not, a "debit" card with a credit card symbol on it. They can be long gone with the debit card number and you will have little or no recourse. The stories I could tell.

Cancel the order, ask to have an e-mail notification of the charge back when the RMA is received and contest any charges.

Notify the credit card provider immediately to cancel the number and monitor your credit card charges hourly until they tell you the card has been cancelled. You could easily have unauthorized charges by now.

Holidays and credit cards make it way too easy for customers to get cheated just like this sequence you experienced.

I always check out these "bargain" prices from unknown sellers at http://www.resellerratings.com/ ...Just go there and type in your seller and see what others have said about them. I have found it best to use reputable sellers such as B&H, Adorama, KEH, to name a few. Sounds like the "bait & switch" game to me.

Nikion's equivalent for its full-frame cameras is the 28-300. The 18-200 is intended for their DX format.

I agree with the others, sounds fishy, bait and switchey… The Nikon 18-200 is a fairly expensive lens (unless you’re a pro, then it’s cheap) if someone is offering it $50-100 cheaper than the other places then its grey market (no USA warranty) or worse. If the price sounds too good to be true check out the seller before you buy.

I have seen Photoshop PS5 from a number of places “on sale” for around $50.00. All of them have either been illegal copies or flat out credit card scams. No reputable place sells an expensive piece of software that cheap.

P.S. I have been told that NikonUSA won't even repair a non USA lens or camera, even if you pay for the repair. Not positive that's true but it has kept me away from grey market these days. Plus, unlike the old days, the grey market price is not that much better.

Thanks for all the comments and for the website reference http://www.resellerratings.com/ where I found the same events that happened to me has happened to others. My gut said don't buy from this .com, but I did anyway. The site is BuyHerePhoto.com. I did receive an email the next day after I ordered it indicating the lens has been shipped. Not sure if I have any recourse other than to send it back and pay restocking fee and then I wouldn't be sure they would process my refund. I'm not sure I would do this if it is the correct lens, but I am leaning towards returning it, regardless, for the principle. Thanks again for your comments. I WILL NEVER BUY FROM BuyHerePhoto.com again!
