Great Egret outlined in blue

Can anyone tell me why this bird has a blue outline? I shot a great blue heron also, with no problems. Is it something about the white bird? Never had the problem before (at least I never noticed it before). Thanks in advance.

Nat,

I do not see a Blue Outline around the bird. I do see a Blue caste on the shaded side of the bird's body. The blue caste is caused by Sky Light illuminating the shaded side of the bird.

The best option you have in-camera is to set it's "White Balance" to Sun Light. If you still see a blue caste you will need to adjust White Balance in Post Processing software in your computer.

The attached image is a sample from your image, where White Balance was set and allowed some of the reflected light from the yellow grass to reflect into the shadows.

Thank you, Michael. I had my white balance set to auto. The sun was in and out. I guess that didn't take care of it.

Nat,

You have just experienced the limitations of allowing a computer device control your life :| .

This is why most cameras have manual control overrides. The key is in paying attention to the details around you when capturing images with your camera.

There are three easy ways to learn the finer points pf photography.
1. Read and study your camera's user manual, and try to understand what they are writing about.
2. Ask questions here, but be sure to include as much information as you can so we can address your problem.
3. Go out an practice, practice, practice. With Digital your only cost now is your time. You time learning is cheap compares to other expenses you may have.
