Nikon have brought out two new models of SLR and their D3100 and D5100 are BOTH well discounted here in the UK
Which would you buy and why ?

I looked at the 3100 vs the 5100 and purchased the 5100. I wanted an articulating screen and got a good deal on the camera to boot. Both are excellent DX camera's. Good luck in your decision.

The better sensor, better processor, and handy flip-out LCD screen make the D5100 a definite winner. In my opinion anyway.

I won't recite the specs here, since you've probably checked them out. I'm guessing budget is a consideration since you're considering those two models. Last year I bought a D3100 with two kit lenses and a few necessary accessories, staying within the winning amount of a lottery ticket, so price was a real issue. As a first DSLR, it's been great for learning, but given it to do over, I'd skip a few lunches and go with the 5100.

MT gave you some sound reasons for the 5100 purchase. You won't be disappointed.

I don't think the D3100 does HDR - I made that mistake after buying the D3200. You have to manually make your adjustments. I had to then go out buy a Canon SX50 to get the HDR Feature. I was going to order D5100 but found out none of my existing lens would work in AF. Since the D5100 had the AF in the Lens.
Look at the HDR then decide.

Any lens that works on your D3200 would also work on your D5100. This statement does not hold water.

The 5100 does 3 AEB; the 3100 does not have AEB. One can still do manual bracketing-- of course hand-held is out.

I think you will find the AF-S for the D5200 distinction implies it's has the AF Motor in the Lens. The AF - as the D3200 has is in the body. I only know know what B&H told me. It will work in manual focus.

You are terribly confused it seems. NONE of the D3XXX or D5XXX Nikon bodies have an AF motor in the body. All of those bodies require AF-S lenses to AF. This includes the D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, D5200 as well as the D40, D40X and the D60.
Every other Nikon DSLR built DOES have the AF drive motor in the body and will AF with either AF-S or standard AF lenses. The D3200 will NOT autofocus a standard AF type lens.

Dam, I canceled the D5100 for no good reason. I didn't know that. I have a Sigma 500MM and wanted the telephoto to work in the 5100 along with my other lens. They told me I'd need a new lens to work on the D5100 with the auto focus. I didn't want to go for another $400.00 or so. So I purchased the Canon SX50 for the 3X Bracketing that would have been the D5100.

I should get a rubber stamp for this comment, since I make it so often. Look into getting a refurbished camera. You'll get like-new for less money. Nikon sells them directly, and reputable dealers sell them.
