CR5 but I use old school tech. Made a copy layer - then cloned out the hairs as best I could. Then spray painted the skin tone back. Where her hair was cast a shadow the made most of problems. For her arm, just selected it and did a contrast adjust. for the back drop, just selected it and did a Bucket fill. And time. Took about 2 hours complete. It could have been done in Gimp.

Thank you Took 2 hrs but you did a great job

I think all you need to do is soften things up a bit. It is a very tender photo to remove some blemishes on the newborn. The marks that babies get when they are born, blur the backdrop and smooth out the skin. I would leave the hair the way it is...You captured a special moment and your composition is balanced. Don't over-think it or make it too staged.

As an afterthought , I would smooth the mother's skin around her mouth as well.

The hair looks natural to me. What is distracting to me is the white from the back of her neck and the pattern in the background. I did no post processing only cropped. Forgive me if I was out of line.

Not sure where to respond, I think this crop is really good! I do NOT have the credentials to give an accredited response, but worked for a Pro Photographer who just earned her Master Craftsman w/PPA for 6 1/2 yrs and who used my two kids as here models for 18 yrs, that sometimes the hair across part of the face is TOTALLY ok! It is what she and I called a "happy" mistake. It is natural, like today's music scene is realizing that scratches across vinyl is sometimes better than the squeaky clean sound of digital music. This is a precious image!

She will probably like her hair . Show her one and ask. I find the wrinkles in the negative space more distracting.

Nice shot!! Here's my try from your original raw photo. I resized it to 5 X 7 before uploading.

MaggieMay, I tend to agree with Bamboo in as much as I like the way he/she cropped it. I also think the hair adds to the reality of the photo - a slightly dishevelled new mum with her darling baby. However if you want to get rid of some of the hair do it with the patch tool in PS elements or PS CS5 etc. patch tool works best here because there is not a good spot to clone from (in my opinion) I have attached my very quick effort. Hope you like it.
PS You haven't lived in Australia in a previous life have you? LoL looking at your avatar you look like some one I know.

I don't really think the hair is as distracting as the overexposed mother's arm or the large black space to the right which throws the whole image off balance. Of the various modifications from the preceding contributors, I would take the cropped versions and the ones where the mother's arm was given some shadows and less exposure, making it look like an arm instead of a white sausage. I don't find the hair on the face disturbing, but that is something that some people, you included, would. I like the expression of the picture, and I think with the PP it can be a very attractive one.

I used the burn tool to make the hand darker
