I haven't many birds in flight this summer!
Soon they'll be gone.

Nicely done, Marsha! Would you care to share your settings and set up?

Yes...I should have thought to do that.

1/1000sec f5.6 ISO 400
i had on my Nikon 300 f/4 and a 1.4 TC. Also, I used a Better Beamer with my flash.

If anyone would like to tell me how to set up my camera in a better way, I'm all ears!

On a gimbal. The camera on a gimbal not your ears. "I'm all ears". So how big are you ears? Just kidding. :D

Actually, Marsha, High speed synch is not the best way to go. Hummers are so fast that you need either a high shutter speed (1/5000) or a short flash duration. With HSS you get neither.

Here is a link to a blog post done by a friend of mine that will give you some ideas on how to set things up:

I have read the blog...tomorrow I will be setting things up. I think I have everything he says I need. Only one flash, but that will have to do. Can't wait! Thanks again.

Thanks for that link birdpix. I have everything to set that up except the pistol grip but another ball head should work. I shoot from a blind and found the camera noise only affects a few birds and they soon get used to the noise. Quick motion or a white lens scares them more. Maybe the blind muffles the camera noise or my camera makes less noise. I've learned a lot about birds from sitting in a blind. Birds are not scared of the call of a raptor or falcons. Some do start looking around but I think it's just a different sound to them. Raptors are not going to warn them in advance.
