Hi everyone, hope you all are having a nice summer.
Question (yes I have looked at the active list and nothing was there that helps), Is it legal to sell prints of photographs of NFL players taken at their training camp. I was at the Carolina Panthers training camp this week and took lots of photos and would like to sell some but don't want to get in trouble if its illegal. Also looked up on Google, nothing there either. It was a free camp open to the public.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I would thimk that a license would be required to sell "team" images. Great question for the business types, legal eagles.
I never sell any images of humans ( that can be identified ) with out a model release from said individual.
This sounds like a legal can of worms for the learned to unwind.

43, I'm going to take some educated guesses here, but, it's all they are. I will assume there was NO obvious signage restricting photography.
I also assume somwbody saw you and said nothing.
You could call their front office ans ask about restrictions, maybe they have some, maybe not. If they say, no restrictions, then you are fully clear.
The players were accessible with no reasonable expectation of privacy.
You are probably in the clear.
You are selling them as "fine art", I don't see why you would need model releases.
Good luck. SS

Basically, if your image has an NFL logo anywhere in it, or a viewable copyrighted NFL team logo, you will need permission to use it.

A phone call to the team office is much cheaper then a lawsuit , and doesn't drag on as long .

In my limited understanding of copyright MT is correct.
However, this brings up some interesting questions.
If paparazzi can legally sell pictures of celebs without their permission...why cant you?
If one of these goofballs took a picture of Tiger Woods wearing a Nike cap...could Nike sue him?
If there is a logo and the players are recognizable, you can probably only sell them for "editorial use" (newspapers, some magazines) unless you have permission or a model release.

No it's not legal. Even training camp is the property of the NFL and is exclusive to them. Going to watch the players, that's one thing like watching a game on television. But selling photos of them, in uniform, working at an NFL facility, that's something else again.
You'll need, as they say on television all the time, exclusive, written permission from the NFL and they're not known for allowing that.

Thanks everyone for your help. I will call the Panthers home office next week, but it looks like just me, family and friends will be looking at them.
