These are where I was last year(still am) but they will be here for Christmas so you need to give me some direction now so I can pratice

I am not a portrait photographer, but the first one the white balance is off. I like the lighting in the second one better. The focus should be razor sharp on the eyes. I like shooting my grandkids in natural light. They are beautiful girls.

The images can be edited slightly and will come out better; however, that depends on what you have for software. On the first you used flash? You need to remove the white dots in the eyes. Also there is digital noise on both pictures. What ISO did you use. If you used a too high a one, it would probably be the cause of the noise. I will send what I dd if you want.

in the first shot the light on her eyes seems harsh--like she has lasers getting ready to come out of her eyes! did you use a flash? Next time maybe try some pics near a window, with really nice light pouring in. Natural light is always the best lighting! (IMO!) The first one also looks a little out of focus to me. Remember to have a steady hand and a fast enough shutter speed to keep the photo sharp!
The second shot is really nice composition and focus, but it is very under-exposed. Remember again about finding nice light! I hope you post what you take this year so we can see your improvements!

been busy, just read your review, pse8 games, that is where the white came from in the eyes they are a bit much. Thank you for the comments and I agree with all of them. These are things I will work on.
