Found out the hard way...

...not to use the tripod socket for a hanging camera attachment. Made the set-up introduced by Wahawk in: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-96699-1.html, and attached my Fuji HS10 while sitting at a picnic table. Distracted while camera on table, got up, turned, camera pulled off table and landed on seat, tripod attachment failed. No damage to camera except ruined tripod attachment. Continued to shoot my older daughters go-cart race free-hand.

As I use a tripod for about 80% of my photos, I had no other alternative except to order a Fuji HS50EXR. Oh darn! I'm sure the bank account will recover sometime.
Cheers, Neil

Seems cameras have a mind of their own lately.

Would NEVER use it as a primary attachment, and with my setup, the camera strap is always around my neck!!

I just had a lapse (in attention AND judgement). Still like your idea, but think I'll rig it attached to the strap mounts instead of the tripod socket.

I have argued against using the tripod socket for strap attachments ever since they were introduced, won't be changing my opinion either. Glad the camera is still usable.

Could have also happened in that situation if it had been attached to a monopod or tripod!!

Not really, because I'm not attached to the tripod. I was attached to the camera. :)

I won't be using the tripod socket for anything except the tripod either (on the new camera). The old one now has a neck strap on it.

From what little I have read on the fuji in question this seems to be common. Some state it's plastic. Don't know for sure. I currently use the tripod on my D600 with safety straps to the lugs. I might add, I also am currently in process of changing to lug mounting strictly for this type of setup similar to MT shooters suggestion.

Oh, you could go out on a limb and use it for a monopod.

The tripod socket is, probably, also useful as an anchor for a wrist strap -- not too much stress on it then.

The problem is one of design-intent. What type of load situation was the tripod designed for?

To take the weight of the camera sitting on it...5 lbs? 10lbs? and all pushing straight down into the socket?

So you reverse that...and have the same 5lb hanging down and now possibly swinging or getting a twisting or bending load on it...that's a totally different situation.

I'm not saying that no tripod socket will survive if the camera is hung from it, but I'm with MT Shooter...I'll use the lugs and tripod socket for their designed use.

Take the comma off the end of the link after html and it will work.

Photos on UHH show that in one instance the tripod socket did survive, but the plastic case surrounding it did not. Thereby tearing out the case, (plastic I am sure). That case is not intended to carry the weight of a camera etc. under load, swinging etc.
