Ya, I know I should have mentiioned it before now, BUT I did spring for a D7100 last week. I have been lamenting over a D7000 too long and then read the D7000 vs D7100 reviews and hit the buy it now button over at B&H.
Now here is my problem !! I tried to use my Hoya R72 filter today and get nothing..NOTHING !!! Black images. I get great stuff out of my Cool Pix P7000 with the same filter. What gives ?? No sensitivity to IR ???
Anybody else tried an infared filter on their D7100 and been disappointed ???

Lock your shutter open, point your TV remote at the lens while watching the live view and press the remote button. If you do not see a light from your remote, your camera has an IR blocking filter on it and will need to be modified to shoot IR pictures.
Just bought my first converted for IR camera....edge of the seat wait. One of these days hope to go dslr convert.
I love shooing IP. I used a Nikon D70.
Sorry for the typo. I love shooting IR.

All digital SLR cameras incorporate a filter in front of the sensor that blocks I.R. and U.V. The older ones such as the Nikon D100 etc were not very efficient and those cameras can be used quite successfully for I.R. photography, but newer models like the D7100 have much more efficient filters as you have found out. When you use an I.R. transmitting filter over the lens very little visible light is passed so that when the I.R. absorbing filter in front of the sensor does its job the exposure is virtually zero.
